Subtitled "Unlocking Doors to the Mind and Heart" this is a collection of valuable articles and essays by educational and therapeutic practitioners edited by Matthew Bernier and Judith O'Hare. The foreword is by the pioneering American puppet therapist, Susan Linn and she excellently situates the power of puppets in learning processes and healing. Part One is dedicated to Puppetry in Educationand includes 18 chapters on everything from creativity and talent development through to literacy, multiple intelligences, independent learning, multiculturalism, curriculum development, social skills, television programme formats and puppets in cyberspace - in the USA. Part Two documents Puppetry in Therapy with contributions on its application as a therapeutic medium, animated symbols, the puppet as therapist, trauma and loss, hospital puppet play, puppet healing in a residential home for young children, autism, other therapeutic and educational settings and puppets in recovery. Part Three has just one chapter about monitoring and evaluating puppetry projects. Contributors and a Bibliography also included. This is the best and most up-to-date publication of its kind and has already become a standard reference work in the field for aspiring puppet educationalists and therapists. Highly recommended. Quarto format. 8 b/w photos. p.212.
