The Frame File has always been one of the most popular books especially for Punch & Judy enthusiasts, and also useful for anyone building a hand puppet stage. This new version has 79 pages A4 with the benefits of colour and a revised layout. All the items from the previous edition are included together with minor corrections and updates. Like its predecessor it is a handbook of ideas, gadgets, gimmicks welcomed by experienced performers. There are designs for more than a dozen booths: indoor and outdoor frames, a triangular booth, suitcase theatres, walk-abouts etc. An important new item is the detail of Joe Beeby's 'Unique' frame the bottom half of which is a variation on the George Blake frame but with an entirely different top half. Also included is Basil Smith's 'Fold-Away' frame which for me is the most ingenious in the book. Having handled two of these (for the puppet auction in 2003) I can confirm that this simple concept is the fastest frame ever to erect and also very stable, but it would require precision woodwork. For good measure there are drawings of Smiff's 'Walkabout' theatre and a suitcase frame.
