Translated to English by Elena Mitcoff with an additional chapter on Soviet puppetry and several illustrations not in original Russian edition. It descibes how Efimova, a painter and her husband, a sculptor, weathered the Russian revolution of 1917 travelling with a puppet theatre, and how they continued their work till the 1930's: how they produced their shows, devised their plays, and made hand-puppets, rod- puppets, their own combination of the two types, and shadow- figures: together with pictures of their puppets and stage from drawings and photographs. This reprint also includes a chronology by John Bell, some additional photos from "Puppetry Yearbooks" and a translation of "Pensive Puppets" a play for hand puppets by N Efimova.
