Twenty years have passed since the author’s book 'Puppetry for the Mentally Handicapped' was published. During that time Caroline has gained considerable experience, from her work in the London School of Puppetry and from hundreds of workshops which she has conducted at many centres throughout the UK. She acknowledges that these have brought her into contact with many talented people working in the same and allied fields and much has been learnt from the classes of children and adults themselves. For puppeteers there are suggested projects for those who have to deal with learning disabilities and autism. Of interest to teachers might be the specific material on active learning for very young children which explores how puppetry can be used for developing language and literacy to encourage self-expression and communication.. It explores the use of puppets in education for both adults and children, with a typical inclusiveness towards all those with disabilities. "No-one need be left out of puppetry!" For students it could be a useful beginning to a good theoretical foundation to their studies. Many teachers, therapists and puppeteers will grateful to the author for sharing all this information. There are lots of new and sometimes surprising ideas. "Although it [glove or hand puppet] is an excellent puppet for an audience with any type of disability to watch, these puppets also pose the greatest threat to the successful therapeutic process when it comes to client use." One of the joys of this work is that it is a straightforward easy read, a hallmark of the Human Horizons series. It is softbound with 190 pages, with 21 photos . Certainly this new work will become a valuable reference for anyone running puppet workshops for those with or without disabilities.
