Puppets and Politics by Carol Fijan is the latest publication from the intrepid Luman Coad's Charlemagne Press. Fijan, whom many will know best for her famous co-authoring of "Making Glove Puppets Come Alive (1973) has had a long career as a performer, writer and teacher. This slim volume is her record of seven decades of activism with political issues and concerns through puppet theatre. It documents her early influences such as Lou Bunin, her work for the WPA in the 1930's, her involvement with various street theatre projects in the 1940's, and her contribution to the Puppeteers of America in the 1950's and 1960's. The meeting with Sergei Obraztsov in 1963 and her puppet projects contributing to the Anti-Vietnam War movement were highlights from this time. Other issue-based projects with women, young people, people with disabilities, human rights, cultural diversity between 1970 and the present are explained. Fijan takes the line that puppets have a historic role to entertain and teach about religions and political issues and human rights.
